Ultimaker TPU 95A (thermoplastic polyurethane) is a semi-flexible material that can be used in a wide variety of engineering applications where performance is more important than aesthetic qualities. Although most flexible filaments are usually difficult to print, Ultimaker TPU 95A is optimized for easier and faster printing without negatively affecting layer bonding.
Ultimaker TPU 95A is officially supported as a single material on the Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker 2+. On the Ultimaker 3, it can also be printed experimentally in combination with PVA, ABS, Nylon, PC, or another color of TPU 95A.
Always use the latest version of Cura and make sure that your printer is updated with the latest firmware version to include the correct material profile for Ultimaker TPU 95A.
Note: The information provided here applies to Ultimaker TPU 95A, similar quality cannot be assured with third-party filaments.
For printing Ultimaker TPU 95A a nozzle temperature of around 230 °C is recommended. There is no Cura profile for Ultimaker TPU 95A for a nozzle of 0.8 mm diameter, as the resulting quality is not up to Ultimaker standards.
Note: On the Ultimaker 3 the nozzle and build plate temperature on the first layer may be different due to the 'Print Temperature Initial Layer' and 'Build Plate Temperature Initial Layer' settings in Cura.
The temperatures listed in the table are used for the Ultimaker TPU 95A print profiles in Cura. For best results, it is crucial to always select the correct printer, nozzle diameter, and material in Cura. Also, make sure you have selected the correct material on your Ultimaker 3D printer.
For the most consistent print quality, a relatively low print cooling fan speed is used (between 35% and 60%). To ensure this quality is retained throughout the whole print, the print cooling fan speed will gradually increase for shorter layers.
In most instances, extra adhesion is not necessary for a successful print.
For even better build plate adhesion, apply a thin layer of glue (included in the accessory box of your Ultimaker) to the glass plate.
Note: Do not use the adhesion sheets provided in the Advanced 3D Printing Kit; for Ultimaker TPU 95A, the adhesion is so strong that the sheet will tear after the removal of the first 3D print.
Cura build plate adhesion
A brim is the default build plate adhesion method in the Ultimaker TPU 95A print profiles in Cura. A brim consists of extra lines printed around the perimeter of the initial layers of your model. This ensures reliable adhesion to the build plate.
Ultimaker TPU 95A is not prone to warping or delamination and prints reliably without additional accessories. However, you can try the front enclosure included in the Advanced 3D Printing Kit (for the Ultimaker 2+ or Ultimaker 3) to obtain more consistent and reliable results.
Furthermore, TPU 95A requires a relative humidity of below 50% when printed.
